Alan Lee Tompkins was born to Raymond Lee Tompkins and May Joan Field on December 11, 1944, just outside London, England. He spent his childhood between Eastern Kansas and Northwest Missouri, and graduated from high school in Great Bend, Kansas.
Alan volunteered for service in the Air Force in February of 1965 and was stationed both in Viet Nam and the Philippine Islands. He received multiple commendations for his excellent mechanic work on heavy transport aircraft and fighter jets. While stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base, Alan met his future bride of 58 years, Mildred (Mickey) Irene Thacker. They were married on March 26th, 1966, and eventually settled near Searcy, Arkansas.
Alan retired from Dassault Falcon Jet after more than 35 years of service. He was a private pilot and in his younger years he could be found at Searcy Airport tinkering with or flying his Taylorcraft taildragger he co-owned with his brother-in-law, Farrell Cook or his Cessna 172s he co-owned with his brother Rob. In his retirement years, he loved to spend his time as a handyman in son Stephen’s real estate ventures. When he wasn’t fixing a sink or touching up paint, he loved spending his time around the pool table in his shop, teaching grandkids to play or hustling friends and relatives. He attended Higginson First Baptist Church and was active in the community.
Alan passed from this life on Monday, the 25th of November, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents (Raymond and May) and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Irene Tompkins; daughter, Patricia Joan Elmore of Beebe, son, Jeffery Alan Tompkins (Whitney Leigh Brown) of Fredericksburg, Texas, son, Stephen Ray Tompkins (Kimberly Denise Houser) of Searcy, Arkansas; granddaughters, Katie Rose Elmore and Abby Leigh Elmore; grandsons, Emmett Farrell Tompkins and Benjamin Lewis Tompkins; sister, Barbara Jean Thacker of Maryville, Missouri; brother, Stephen Dale Tompkins of Great Bend, Kansas; and brother, Robert Frank Tompkins (Marcia) of Lonoke, Arkansas.
